#Support Stay Safe Part 2 You’ve Had Enough

You’re ready to go to your boss. You’ve had enough.

This time, you’re cool calm and collected and thanks to reading through my ‘Prepare yourself’ tips, (- see the link at the end) you feel strong.

Stop for a moment and think about the best course of action to help you #staysafe and feeling #well.

I once went to my boss with a complaint that felt absolutely justified then found myself with egg on my face because I hadn’t really thought through the consequences. Very often we just want someone to be admonished or even punished because they’re definitely doing the wrong thing!

It’s just not fair.

That keen sense of injustice has driven me to make many a quick decision that hasn’t always ended in the result I expected.

On this occasion I was actually this person’s team lead and on reflection I should have had a quiet word with her but I ducked out of my responsibility because she was a bit scary.

As requested, my boss had a word but perhaps my name was mentioned and from then on, relations were very frosty. That certainly didn’t help us to work together. Had I taken the responsibility on myself to say something, it may have had the same outcome but I needed to ‘Step Up.’

What’s the Next BEST STEP?

1. Be really clear about what you want.

2. Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to trusted colleagues or mentors for guidance and support.

3. Clarify your goal and run your plan by them. What’s the outcome you really want?

4. Role play is a great tool to be sure you can answer the awkward questions

5. Record your conversation and listen to your voice.
Are you being apologetic or too pushy? Seek that professional middle ground.

6. Be prepared for your manager being uncomfortable. There may be some ‘kickback’. After all, you’ve put them on the spot.

7. Ask for another appointment to follow up with them. You may get fobbed off but show that you’re serious and keep following up if need be.

8. Debrief with your colleague but avoid the emotional whirlpool that can have you thinking over and over about the same thing.
