Stay safe at work series – Prepare

We’ve all been there. You’re furious, hurt and upset with someone or something that’s happened at work, or it could be just the constant grind and overwhelm and you’ve had enough.

Do you get it off your chest by telling as many people as possible? Do you have a rant when you get home? Do you feel teary and unable to cope?

We’ve got #mentalhealthweek this week and it’s #Safetyatwork month so maybe it’s time to learn how to deal with those challenges in a safer way to protect your health and wellbeing.

Let’s talk #strategy.

Here are the first of three posts to help you Stay Safe and get what you want. (Well, to have more chance of success!)

BE PREPARED

1. Define Your Objective:
– Determine what you want to achieve by speaking out. Is it to address a specific problem, request a change, or report misconduct?

Having a clear goal will guide your approach.

2. Identify the Problem:
– Before speaking out, make sure you have a thorough understanding of the problem you want to address.

Define the issue, its impact on you or the organisation, and potential solutions.

3. Know Your Rights:
– If you’re dealing with harassment or discrimination, familiarise yourself with our laws and company policies.

Understand what qualifies as harassment and the steps for reporting it.

Or if you’re not sure, seek advice.

This knowledge will help you advocate for yourself effectively.

4. Understand the Person’s Style:
– Consider the communication style of the person you’re going to talk to. Tailor your approach to their preferences. Some people may respond better to logical arguments, while others may be more influenced by emotional appeals.

5. Gather Evidence:
– If your concern involves someone’s behaviour or actions, gather evidence to support your claims. Document specific events, dates, times, and any witnesses if applicable. This evidence can be crucial if your concern escalates.

Above all, you need to be in control. Try to stay calm and think objectively about your goal and know the possible outcomes of your conversation.

Don’t keep worrying about it! Your mental health is a priority and you’re important so put yourself first!

Let’s chat if you need a bit more clarity.
