The Rhino in the Room
The rhino is thick skinned – in fact it looks almost armour plated and it is very short sighted.
How many managers do you know like that who are unable to change with the times?
Protection is very much needed for this ancient endangered species but who is protecting the managers when they continue to act in a such a punitive way towards women?
Call it misogyny, coercive control or simply bullying, these men and women are becoming fewer but they can only continue to exist when they are-
a ‘Protected Species!!!’
It’s not a coincidence I think that three women have spoken with me about their situation at work this week and all of them have left the job they love, or are about to because their manager has been abusive and the CEO hasn’t done the right thing.
Even more insidious in the case of Kathryn (not her real name), is that the CEO (who’s not in the same location) was very supportive and concerned for her welfare.
The concern might have been real but it wasn’t backed by the much needed action when her manager crossed the line yet again sending nasty texts at the weekend and ignoring an event when someone grabbed her inappropriately.
This makes me so angry!
When I asked what had been done by the caring CEO, Kathryn said,
‘Nothing. He (the manager) is a protected species because he’s good at his job.’
CEOs like this really aren’t doing themselves any favours by protecting these myopic ‘rhinos’. Not only is their reputation going down the toilet, they’re losing some of their best staff, AND our WHS law quite rightly pings the CEO who can end up facing huge fines.
The sooner these Neanderthals – men and women alike – start understanding that the world is changing, the better.
Let’s hope they soon become an endangered species.
